THE HAWTHORNE SAFE INITIATIVE
Enhanced Community Safety Measures & Outreach
From 2018 to 2019, Hawthorne saw a drop in property crime of 35% while residential burglary was down 30%. According to the Hawthorne Police Department, overall violent crime dropped 17% in a single year, according to the Hawthorne Police Department.
Under the Hawthorne Safe Initiative, supported by Councilmember Haidar Awad, Candidate for Mayor, over 100 security cameras have been installed in city parks. The program has also focused on increased safety measures on streets, schools, businesses, and neighborhoods throughout Hawthorne. From police officers educating parents, teachers, and administrators about rush hour traffic dangers to creating a Neighborhood Watch program, the Hawthorne Safe Initiative along with Hawthorne law enforcement has been providing a higher level of service to the community, which Haidar Awad has been supportive of.
Councilmember Awad never misses an opportunity to honor law enforcement and offer a platform for them to interact with the residents of Hawthorne. In an effort to reestablish trust and reconnect with their community, the Hawthorne Police Department launched ‘Coffee with a Cop Day’ back in 2011. By 2016, Coffee with a Cop Day had caught on nationally, spreading to all 50 states, and is now a staple throughout many communities. It’s a shining example of how much the city of Hawthorne loves and honors our police department.
