PREPARING THE YOUTH OF HAWTHORNE FOR THE FUTURE
EXPANDING INITIATIVES ON EDUCATION, SAFETY, AND MENTAL HEALTH
The young people of Hawthorne are especially dear to Councilmember Awad, as they are the future of the city. In addition to The Awad Family Scholarship Program, which supports high school students as they move on to college, Haidar continues to host tours of city hall to teach students about the importance of civic duty.
The City of Hawthorne has worked hard to reimagine the outdoor space of its schools with the introduction of the STEAM project. Instead of viewing play areas as a place strictly for recess, it would be reimagined as a community gathering place as well. A place specifically designed for open-ended learning and youth-focused community involvement.
Hawthorne takes a creative approach to educating the youth, with focus put on interactive projects. STEAM is short for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. This hands-on project has provided a tremendous opportunity for students and teens to take a direct role in the process of building these communal areas in their community.
Each young person’s experience will consist of real-life exposure to careers and career planning exercises that will culminate in a viable plan for post-secondary education. Councilmember Awad is passionate about contributing to the expansion of these interactive experiences so that the young people of Hawthorne can better envision their future and create a clear path to success. Haidar Awad’s goal is to continue to expand initiatives that focus on the safety, health, and well-being of the younger residents of Hawthorne.
