Councilmember Haidar Awad and the city council sadly said goodbye to Colonel Neil Gafney, long time resident of Hawthorne at the December 10, 2019 meeting. “While I’m happy for my friend Neil Gafney as he retires, I’m sad for Hawthorne,” said Councilmember Haidar Awad, “we are losing a gifted leader who brought his vast managerial skills to guide us to a safer community.”

Neil retires as Hawthorne’s director of Emergency Preparedness but is so well known in Hawthorne because of his years of volunteer service as Chair and founding member of the Hawthorne Veterans Commission, President and past vice president of the 360 Homeowners Association, and Past Grand Knight and director of membership for the St. Joseph Knights of Columbus to name only a few.

“Colonel Gafney personifies our city motto ‘City of Good Neighbors’ and I’m proud to offer him this Key to the City,” said Awad.
