Everyone deserves dignity, respect, protection under the law, and basic human rights. Our LGBTQ citizens fought hard and long for these “inalienable rights” and this June 2020 I stand with them on the 50th Anniversary of the first Pride marches. Much has progressed in 50 years, but so much more is left to accomplish.

“50 years ago, out and proud members of the LGBTQ community marched to demand equal rights and an end to the legal persecution of our community.

Today, we commemorate their courage and the progress that they and those who followed made possible.

While discrimination and violence against our community are not a thing of the past, our community now enjoys legal rights and a level of community support that would have been unimaginable to those pioneers.

In that journey, we had the support of many straight allies and, as we continue to fight for justice and equality, we are grateful for the support of those elected officials today who are fighting side by side with our community.

Hawthorne City Councilmember Haidar Awad, Candidate for Mayor is a friend and an ally to our community. We are grateful for his support and we look forward to continue working with him for the betterment of the City of Hawthorne and of our state.”
