QUALITY OF LIFE
FOCUSING ON THE HEALTH & SAFETY OF HAWTHORNE
Improving Emergency Response & Police-Community Relations
The quality of life of Hawthorne residents has been one of Haidar Awad’s top priorities. To make the city more livable, Haidar has supported the Hawthorne Safe initiative. This initiative includes increased DUI enforcement aimed at reducing accidents and fatalities, as well as education on traffic safety, particularly on streets around local schools.
The Mayor Pro Tem has gone to great lengths to ensure the safety of Hawthorne’s tap water from contaminants, including from the novel coronavirus. He accomplished this by improving stormwater drainage in the area with new diversion and filtration chambers.
A trash pickup initiative, which became effective July 1, 2019, sets guidelines for requiring residents to schedule pick-ups of bulk items from their homes. Each customer is entitled to the collection of up to 20 bulky items per year at no cost. A crackdown on property crime and improvements in police-community relations (Coffee with a Cop, Scottie the police service dog, futsal mentoring, etc.) have been realized under Haidar Awad’s tenure.
